How to Travel from Nairobi to Masai Mara

There are two main ways to get from Nairobi to Masai Mara: by road or by air. Each option has its own advantages.

1. Traveling by Road

This is the most common way to reach Masai Mara. The journey takes 5 to 6 hours depending on the route and road conditions.

  • Nairobi to Narok (150 km, 3 hours) – The first part of the journey is on a paved road, and it is a smooth ride.
  • Narok to Masai Mara (75-130 km, 2-3 hours) – The second part of the journey is on rough roads, which can be bumpy, especially during the rainy season.

Seko Tours provides comfortable safari vehicles with experienced drivers to ensure a smooth journey.

2. Traveling by Air

If you prefer a faster and more comfortable journey, you can fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to an airstrip in Masai Mara. The flight takes only 45 minutes.

The main airstrips in Masai Mara are:

  • Keekorok Airstrip
  • Musiara Airstrip
  • Ol Kiombo Airstrip
  • Mara North Airstrip
  • Kichwa Tembo Airstrip

Seko Tours can arrange a flight for you and organize a safari vehicle to pick you up from the airstrip and take you to your lodge or camp.

Best Time to Visit Masai Mara for the Migration

The Great Migration happens between July and October, when millions of wildebeest cross the Mara River from Tanzania to Kenya. This is the best time to visit Masai Mara if you want to see dramatic river crossings, where crocodiles wait for their prey.

However, Masai Mara is great to visit all year round. Even outside the migration season, you can see lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, and buffaloes (the Big Five) in Masai Mara.

What to Expect on the Journey

  • If traveling by road: Expect a scenic drive through the Great Rift Valley, where you can stop and take photos.
  • If flying: You will see amazing aerial views of the plains and wildlife before landing in Masai Mara.
