What Are the Dangers of the Wildebeest Migration?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is one of the most spectacular wildlife events on Earth. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with zebras and gazelles, travel across the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya in search of fresh grass and water. This journey is beautiful but also full of dangers. As safari specialists from Seko Tours, we have seen the migration up close and understand the risks these animals face.

1. Dangerous River Crossings

One of the biggest challenges wildebeest face is crossing dangerous rivers like the Mara River. As they jump into the water, many dangers await:

  • Crocodiles – Huge crocodiles wait under the water, ready to catch any wildebeest that struggles.
  • Strong Currents – The water moves fast, and young or weak wildebeest can drown.
  • Stampedes – Wildebeest panic easily. When they all rush at once, some fall and get trampled.

2. Predators Waiting to Hunt

Big predators know the migration is their chance to hunt easily. The wildebeest must be careful of:

  • Lions – Lions wait in tall grass and attack the weaker or slower ones.
  • Leopards – These cats hide in trees and grab young wildebeest.
  • Hyenas – Hyenas hunt in groups and steal from other predators.
  • Cheetahs – The fastest land animals target baby wildebeest who can’t run fast enough.

3. Harsh Weather and Starvation

The journey is long and tiring. Sometimes the animals face:

  • Drought – If there is no rain, there is no water or grass to eat.
  • Extreme Heat – The sun is very hot, and the animals get tired quickly.
  • Cold Nights – It can get very cold at night, making young wildebeest weak.

4. Injuries and Sickness

Since the migration never stops, sick or injured wildebeest struggle to keep up. The dangers include:

  • Broken Bones – When they fall in a stampede or on rocky ground.
  • Diseases – Some animals get sick from dirty water or infections from wounds.
  • Exhaustion – Walking for months without rest makes them weak.

5. Human Dangers

Humans also make the migration harder for wildebeest. Some dangers include:

  • Poaching – Some people try to hunt wildebeest illegally.
  • Fences and Roads – If people build fences or roads, it blocks the migration path.
  • Tourist Disturbance – Too many vehicles can stress the animals.
